We’re creating a place for seafarers

On March 1, the Humanist Association was handed over the property of the future Seafarer’s Social Service in Oldenburg (SSSO). In Cloppenburger Straße, „50 Miles“ will soon begin operations as the first meeting and counseling point for seafarers in Oldenburg.

They will receive prominent support from Oldenburg’s Lord Mayor Jürgen Krogmann, who is acting as patron of the project. The barrier-free accessible building of a former bank offers on more than 200 square meters best conditions for the operation of a social institution. In addition to recreation rooms, where billiards or table soccer games can be played, there are also many retreat possibilities, for example, to be able to have conversations with the family at home in peace. In the Room of Silence, everyone can withdraw according to their faith or their world view or religion.

First, however, the renovation of the rooms is pending. Provided that the infection situation allows it, the first seamen should then be able to be welcomed in „50 Miles“ in May. An opening celebration is planned for the summer. Until then, the seafarers will continue to be cared for on board by the HV staff.
